Queer Human Library
Queer Dumfries: A Representation
Come along, choose your Human Book, and engage with their stories and unique life experiences.
Human Libraries promote understanding and combat prejudice in a structured and protected space.
Prepare for an enlightening, perspective shifting, life changing evening!
The Human Library promotes community engagement and combats prejudice by bringing people with unique life experiences together to have open and honest conversations.
Our "Human Books" represent lifestyles and experiences that are often met with misunderstanding and discrimination. Books and Readers have the opportunity to speak personally and in private in a structured, protected space within a limited time, but without any further commitment.
Today the LGBTQ+ community’s presence can be openly seen / felt across the Dumfries, but this has not always been the case. Though many inequalities still exist, we take pride in a community which has been through so much, from repression and persecution, to violence and discrimination, all of which we have experienced on the streets of Dumfries, yet we rise and continue to strive towards bringing equality and inclusivity for all, enabling our LGBTQ+ community to become part of the fabric of regular Dumfries life.
This Human Library has been designed to share and celebrate Dumfries’ own unique queer heritage and culture, remember and honour those who have gone before us, increase understanding / visibility, and to enable us to proudly and openly take our rightful place in the history of our town.
